There's a much less publicized, but equally gorgeous route in Ireland, called The Loophead Peninsula. It's a long day of driving, but completely worth it for the bright-blue-water meets Irish-green views. The best place to stay to do it would be The Lodge at Doonbeg, but it's also do-able from Galway. From Galway, you can plot stops in Kinvarra and Moran's Oyster Cottage in Kilcolgan, the famous Cliffs of Moher and Doonbeg (even if you're not staying, go have lunch at The Lodge!).
Don't miss the tiny towns of Kilrush and Kilkee (about ten miles apart). We had lunch at the Stella Maris Hotel in Kilkee, where our fabulous waiter told us we had to go see the Cliffs of Kilkee. "Everyone goes to the Cliffs of Moher, but the Cliffs of Kilkee are just as gorgeous," he told us. It is where some of my favorite family photos were taken. It really is as beautiful as the Cliffs of Moher (though much shorter) and you can really get close to peer down at the crashing waves. There's no fence...don't fall!
