I live in the greatest city in the world, New York. But I always will feel a little bit of a tug for L.A. I spent a wonderful, whirlwind week in L.A. last month staying in great hotels, hanging out with new and old friends, and seeing my brother and sister-in-law. It reminded me why I need to visit more than once a year.
One thing I have to do on every trip to L.A. is watch the sunset at Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica. This trip, I managed to snag a table on the balcony around 2 p.m., and wrote until two friends showed up just in time for the sunset.
It was one of those perfect nights where everything comes together: the weather, view, drinks, great conversation, food, and music carrying onto the deck from the lobby. If it gets too cold, you can move to an oversized couch in the wonderful lobby, but I loved staying on the deck in the cool February air under the heaters.
Shutters on the Beach captures that ideal of California we all dream of wrapped in a Nantucket-styled exterior. It's laidback but upscale, where you feel equally at home in flip-flops and a sweatshirt or a cocktail dress and cashmere sweater. I will never miss an opportunity for a Shutters sunset when I'm in L.A.
